Chitungwiza is considered Alick Macheso’s fortress in local sungura circles.

No other sungura musician is expected to fill up the giant Chitungwiza Aquatic Complex or Tanza Centre in the sprawling town.

The two venues boast of a huge carrying capacity, which requires real crowd pullers.

However, Kadoma-based sungura artiste and Tongai Moyo’s mentee, Solo Moyo, has dared to try his luck at Tanza Centre and is confident he will fill up the venue and change the narrative.

He is set to unveil his eighth album titled “ZvaMwari Hazvipikiswe” at Tanza.

Backed by the superb Kutinya Express, Moyo has invited an array of top sungura artistes to perform at the launch.

Veteran lyricist Leonard Zhakata, Progress Chipfumo, Suluman Chimbetu,  Kinna and Kapfupi are part of the bill.

In an interview with The Herald Arts, Moyo said he believed he has come of age and is determined to conquer.

“The musical calling is irresistible and I have always wanted to pursue it,” he said. “It has been a while now and I am always confident that I will make it. My time has come for me to make it to the top and I am confident this album will leave an impression.”

Buoyed by the success of previous albums, Moyo was upbeat he would brew a shocker.

“It feels good to turn heads when walking in the streets or driving around,” he said. “As an artist, we all want that kind of attention to follow us and I am very confident that the time has come for me to shin out there.

“I have managed to convince top artistes like Mdara Leonard Zhakata, Suluman Chimbetu, Progress Chipfumo, Kinna and Kapfupi to be part of this event. These are some of the top entertainers I look up to and I believe in unity for us to conquer as one.

“If you look at this line-up, you can see that variety is guaranteed and it’s going to be a full house at Tanza Centre.”

Having been taught the ropes by the late sungura legend, Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo, Moyo believes he owes the family of his mentor a lot.

In that vein, he has invited Tongai’s son, Obert to be part of the event.

“Tongai’s kids — Obert and Peter — have been doing well to revive their father’s music,” said Moyo. “As someone who was groomed by their father, I am always in touch with them. At this launch, Obert will be there to do what he knows best.”

Judging by the success of his previous album “Zvinobva Kunashe”, Moyo has every reason to be confident his latest offing will do much better. Music experts who attended a listening session for the new album endorsed it as a potential success.
