SOLUSI and Empandeni High Schools are this year’s Matabeleland South provincial champions in the Environmental Management Agency’s high schools debate meant to encourage the younger generation to be eco-conscious.

The schools, Solusi from Bulilima district and Empandeni from Mangwe district, shrugged off stiff competition from nine others at competitions held at Gwanda Government Secondary School on Tuesday.

For winning, they were both awarded floating shields and cash prizes.

They had debated on the topic: “Wetlands are sensitive and fragile ecosystems on which human interference should be banned.”

Tadiwa Rodney Nyadete, a Lower Sixth Science student at Solusi was adjudged the best speaker and was given a prize money for his efforts.

“I’m quite happy I was named the best speaker and believe it was because of teamwork and support from my school. We thank the Lord for being with us all the way,” Tadiwa said before advising fellow youths to jealously guard the environment and not pollute it.
Solusi debate team patron Bathabile Vela said she was excited about their achievement, paying tribute to their school for providing all the necessary support.

“We’re impressed and I’d like to congratulate my kids for working hard. I’m glad it all paid off. We also thank everyone who supported us,” Vela said.

Solusi was on the non-affirmative side where Gwanda High took second position with Filabusi High closely following in third position.

On the affirmative side, Empandeni was followed by Thekwane and Mzingwane High Schools on second and third positions respectively.

“We feel priviledged to have been named the best debate team in the province. We showcased our talents while also educating others on critical issues about the environment,” Empandeni debate team leader, Tarisai Mapfupa said.
