Francophone Week film fest begins

expected to captivate art lovers for a week.
Exhibitions and other cultural activities will take place in Harare and Bulawayo until Saturday evening when the curtain comes down.
Held throughout the world every year, the Francophone Week promotes the French language as well as the culture of French-speaking countries and of countries where a large part of the population speaks French.
Seven diplomatic missions that are members of the “La Francophone,” an international organisation represented in more than 50 countries on five continents that promote interaction in favour of peace, democracy and human rights through French as common language, will take part.
These include embassies of Romania, Canada, Algeria, Belgium, France, Switzerland, as well as the European Union.
Various events covering a wide range of cultural activities that include movies, music concerts, dictation in French, national schools competition on the French language and a photo exhibition are some of the events that are expected to captivate art lovers for a week.
The Alliance Française in Harare and The French School “Jean de la Fontaine” are some of the venues where some of these events would be held.
The opening ceremony would be on tonight at the residence of the Ambassador of Canada.
It would be followed by the screening of the movie “Congorama”, done by Canadian film director Philippe Farladeau, which is the first of the eight movies programmed for the week long festival.
This year’s music competition would be big and better, with 50 students from Harare schools expected to take part.
The grand finale of the music contest that is being hosted by the Alliance Francaise in conjunction with Nestle, “Sing your way to Paris” would be held on Friday.
The best singer will win a two-week trip to Paris.
