adminA 60-year-old man from Madziva in Mashonaland Central Province was last week sentenced to 14 years in prison by Bindura magistrate Mr William Bhila for raping his 90-year-old mother.
The state heard that on a number of occasions last year, Makenice Mushore, a member of the Johanne Masowe weChishanu, dreamt of being intimate with his mother, Regina Chinyanga.
It was upon consulting some church elders that the man was advised to fulfil the dream, failure of which would result in his sudden death. Prosecutor Mr Samson Chamunorwa told the court that on an unknown date in December, the mother visited her son at his homestead and found him alone.
Mushore is said to have dragged Chinyanga into his kitchen hut and raped her once.
Mr Chamunorwa said on December 6, the victim narrated the incident to her grandson, George Muza, who dismissed her story.
On 22 December, Chinyanga repeated the story and managed to convince Muza. He then took the old woman to Mushore’s homestead for inquiries.
Mushore is said to have admitted to commiting the crime. He told Muza that he had paid Chinyanga a cow as compensation for his actions.
Muza made a police report which led to Mushore’s arrest.
In passing the 14-year sentence, Mr Bhila said Mushore had not wasted the court’s time. Mushore will serve an effective eight years in prison after six years were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
