ICELAND-based Zimbabwe international forward, Silas Songani, believes Zimbabwean football is now well poised for a massive turnaround, following another Africa Cup of Nations qualification.
Songani has spent two years at Iceland top division side Vestri and has made 22 appearances this season.
He plays mainly as a winger and has scored two goals.
“Qualifying for another Afcon is a major milestone because this keeps the country on the international football map,” says Songani.
The vastly experienced winger has settled well in Iceland after a long stint in Denmark.
Songani also played for Harare City and FC Platinum in the local Premier Soccer League.
He has also featured several times for the senior national team.
“Congratulations to the boys for qualifying under difficult conditions.
“Remember we did not have a home ground but the boys still managed to qualify for next year’s Afcon finals,” said Songani.
Zimbabwe qualified as the second-best in Group J, behind Cameroon.
Kenya were third while Namibia anchored the group.
The Warriors played all their home matches away as there is no CAF-certified stadium in Zimbabwe. They used the Nelson Mandela Stadium in Kampala, Uganda when they hosted Cameroon in September.
The Warriors hosted Namibia at the Orlando Stadium in Johannesburg in October before shifting to Peter Mokaba in Polokwane for their last home game against Kenya in November.
“There were challenges along the way but that’s how it is in football.
“What is important is that Zimbabwe will play at the 2025 Afcon finals.”
Morocco will host the 2025 Afcon finals where Zimbabwe will make a sixth appearance. “Success brings happiness to the nation and the whole country is happy,” added Songani. The lethal winger is expected back home next week for the Christmas break.
“Life is good in Iceland, you can enjoy it a lot but one thing that can disturb you is the weather.
