Sonji: The Rise of Zimbabwe’s Golden Boy

Online Reporter

In the vibrant township of Mzilikazi, a young Lynoth ‘Sonji’ Chikhuwa would spend hours kicking a ball around the dusty streets, dreaming of one day making it big in football.

Fast forward to the present, and Chikhuwa is now one of the most exciting players in Zimbabwean football, with a Golden Boot award and a Soccer Star of the Year runner-up finish to his name.

Chikhuwa’s journey to the top has been a long and winding one, but it’s a testament to his hard work, dedication, and natural talent.

Growing up in Mzilikazi, Chikhuwa was surrounded by a family of music lovers and sports enthusiasts. His uncles, who played a significant role in his upbringing, were a diverse bunch – one was a DJ, another an electrician, and one was a musician. But it was his eldest uncle, Isaac, who seemed to have a spark of football magic in him.

Isaac’s passion for football rubbed off on Chikhuwa, who would spend hours playing with his friends in the streets of Mzilikazi. It was here that Chikhuwa developed his love for the game, and his natural talent began to shine through.

Chikhuwa’s big break came when he joined Tsholotsho Pirates, a local club that gave him the platform to showcase his talents. His impressive performances caught the attention of Highlanders, one of Zimbabwe’s top clubs, and soon he was playing in the Castle Premiership.

The rest, as they say, is history. Chikhuwa’s explosive performances on the pitch earned him the Golden Boot award in 2024, and his outstanding form also saw him finish as the first runner-up in the Soccer Star of the Year award.

And now, Chikhuwa has taken the next step in his career, signing with super club Scotland FC. It’s a move that is expected to take his game to new heights, and Chikhuwa is eager to seize the opportunity.

“I’m thrilled to join Scottland FC,” Chikhuwa said in a recent interview.

“It’s a club with the potential and vision to become one of the best in the history of Zimbabwean football with a very passionate fan base. I’m looking forward to working with the coaching staff and my new teammates to achieve great things.”

As Chikhuwa looks back on his journey from Mzilikazi to the top of Zimbabwean football, he is quick to acknowledge the role his family, particularly his uncles and his mother, played in shaping his career.

“My uncles and my mother were my earliest influences,” Chikhuwa said.

“They taught me the importance of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. I’m grateful for the values they instilled in me, and I hope to make them proud as I continue to pursue my dreams.”

With his talent, work ethic, and dedication, Chikhuwa is sure to achieve great things in the world of football
