SOS for Interprovincial Championships

NATIONAL Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (Naaz) secretary general Cynthia Phiri has made a national appeal for support from all stakeholders ahead of the Interprovincial Championships.

Phiri is hoping schools, parents, and communities across the country will back the championships, famously known as “The Battle of the Ten Provinces”.

They are set for Saturday, June 7, at White City Stadium in Bulawayo.

The nation’s top male and female athletes from all ten provinces will compete to represent Zimbabwe at the Southern Region Senior Championships, in Harare from July 26-27.

Phiri spoke on the significance of the meet, which serves as a qualifier for the July regional event.

“This is no ordinary competition — it is a defining national assignment. The Battle of the Ten Provinces is not only about athletic performance, but it is about national pride, development, and legacy,” she said.

“We are calling upon all  schools, parents, and Zimbabweans from every corner of the country to be present at White City Stadium.

“Come and witness talent at its finest, come and support the dreams of our youth. This is the engine room of our national selection.”

The Interprovincial Championships are at the heart of Naaz’s ambitious 5-Year Strategic Development Plan (2024–2028), which focuses on developing elite athletes for national representation, engaging grassroots and youth pathways, promoting international hosting and exposure, and utilising sport as a powerful tool for national unity, health, and pride.

“Let this not be a Bulawayo event — it must be a Zimbabwean moment,” Phiri added. “Your presence is your investment in the future of Zimbabwean sport.”
