LOCAL golfers continued to play second fiddle in the FBC Zimbabwe Open Championship after South African Neil Schietekat won the tournament by four strokes at Royal Harare Golf Club yesterday.

Schietekat had a brilliant performance that saw him win his fourth Sunshine Tour title. The win was his first on Zimbabwean soil. The South African had an impressive 11 under-par total 277 after he carded scores of 67, 69, 66 and 75 to run away with the tritle.

In second place was South Africans Jacques P De Villiers and Jaco Ahlers, along with Peter Karmis after the trio finished with a score of 281 and a par score of -7.

De Villiers carded 67, 70, 76 and 68 while Ahlers had scores of 71, 69, 71 and 70. Karmis carded 67, 73, 71 and 70.

“I have been coming here for probably nine or 10 years, it’s always been an event that I like to have won so I pulled through today (yesterday) so I’m really chuffed with myself,” said Schietekat.  “I have won three events and this is my fourth. So I stuck to what I did when I did win tournaments, tough golf courses, just keep it in the moment and don’t think ahead of yourself, just hit shot by shot and I enjoyed every moment of it.

“This one is very special for me, it’s my biggest win. It’s a four round event and a lot of events that we have back home are three round events so this being a four round event it kind of shows myself that I can win four round events so it means a lot to me,” said Schietekat.

Kieran Vincent proved that he is the best promising professional golfer after he was the best placed Zimbabwean.

The youngster carded 72, 71, 70 and 72 for a total of 285 and a par score of three under-par. He was tied for sixth place alongside South African Danie Van Niekerk, who also had a total of 285 and a similar par score.

Vincent’s good run is a continuation of his form after he won the Asia Tour International Series Vietnam last month.

The second highest ranked Zimbabwean was Biggie Chibvuri who was tied for position 18 with a total of 288 and level par. He carded scores of 71, 72, 74 and 71 to finish in position 24. Robson Chinhoi finished in 24th place with a two over-par score 290.
