A strong field of South Africans, including defending champion Jbe’ Kruger, dominate this year’s edition of the Golden Pilsner Zimbabwe Open golf tournament that teed off at the Royal Harare Golf Club yesterday morning.
A total of 107 golfers from across the Limpopo are taking part in Zimbabwe’s flagship golf event that also has 33 Zimbabweans, one Brazilian, golfers from the United States, two from England, one from Italy, two from Portugal and Zambia as well as one each from Zimbabwe’s neighbours, Botswana, Namibia and Swaziland.
“That shows the scope of the Zimbabwe Open. It’s now able to attract top golfers from across the globe and the other reason is that the Sunshine Tour is much bigger than the Zambezi Tour,” said Zambezi Tour marketing and communications manager Tendayi Gwatiringa.
By mid-morning yesterday, the South Africans had occupied nine of the first 10 positions as they once again threatened to run away with the first prize, like they have done since the reintroduction of the Zimbabwe Open in 2010.
Tonderayi Masunga, an amateur from Wingate Golf Club occupied the 10th place as the Day One field neared the end. The tournament is sponsored to the tune of RI,8 million.
