Spook House, located along Mutare Road, is the new hotspot in Harare for open air entertainment and leisure. People may be put off by the name, but according to the owners, there are no spooks at the venue. In fact, the place is now synonymous with great entertainment and revelry.
The allure of the place is its cool ambience and it is only a few minutes’ drive out of the city centre.
The place is famous for their signature pub lunch which is a kilogramme of rump steak which you don’t pay for if you are able to finish it as well as a kilogramme of Buffalo wings, burger and pork ribs, which are popular among revellers.
Music lovers usually go out to the Spook House to kick back and relax while they enjoy a couple of cold drinks and music.
The hangout opens during weekdays except Mondays when they open for lunch.
During weekends things get turned up with music by Steven Sanders who is more popularly known as DJ Stavo.
DJ Stavo, aka Kwekwe Hustler, is known for rocking the masses with a mash-up of house and hip-hop club bangers.
Hordes of people flock to the venue on Saturdays with their dancing shoes ready to hit the dance floor.
But music isn’t the only thing you find at the Spook House but also pool tables located upstairs for those that love the game.
Vaughn Burton of Spook House said they do not pre-cook anything but serve food per order.
“Basically our menu is strictly pub type where we offer T-Bone steaks, buffalo wings and pork ribs, which everyone revs about. The food is also available for takeaways but you place orders before arrival.
“We have what we call the rump challenge where you buy a kilogram of the steak. If you finish it you don’t pay but if you don’t then you pay. It is a generous portion that takes the very hungry to finish. Sundays are special days because we host family fun days,” Burton said.
He said the place will be open for private functions as well as Christmas parties. Their long-term plan is to start other recreational facilities such as beach volleyball and five aside soccer pitch.
Last month, the venue hosted the popular Octoberfest in conjunction with the German Society and other functions including the Jazz Festival where Judith Sephuma, Oliver Mtukudzi, Louis Mhlanga and Kunle Ayo performed.
