ZIMBABWE sport could benefit immensely if the government establishes state-owned ventures which will in turn channel resources towards the development of sport in the country.
The country is endowed with rich sporting talent but most of the athletes would rather pursue other things than invest their expertise in sport since it is one of the most under-paying industries in the country.
Speaking on the side-lines of an International Sports Management Course held by his organisation Liike Sports and Development, in association with the Sport Leaders Institute of Zimbabwe on Tuesday, Finnish expert Ari Johannes Koivu said it was important for governments to run ventures which will in turn finance the running of sport in respective countries.
Koivu said sport in his home country is mainly sponsored by a state-owned sports betting company, Veikkaus, which he said ploughs back over $150 million to the sport industry annually.
