THE Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) Bulawayo Metropolitan Province brought this year’s Prisons Day commemorations to a vibrant conclusion with a series of spirited sporting events that thrilled both participants and spectators at White City Stadium.
Held under the theme “Evidence-Based Rehabilitation for Sustainable Reintegration,” the commemorations saw inmates and officers taking part in friendly yet competitive matches across various sporting disciplines, promoting fitness, unity, and the ZPCS’s core values of rehabilitation through community engagement.
Among the highlights was a netball match in which Leopards, a team comprising community members from the White City area, convincingly beat the Mlondolozi inmates 22–6. In the tug-of-war contest, Bulawayo City Council proved too strong for Khami Prison, winning 2–0 in a show of teamwork and strength.
The main attraction of the day was a lively football match between Khami Medium Prison’s Rehab FC and Ambassadors Football Club. The crowd was particularly animated as football legends including Zenzo Moyo, Agent Sawu, Danisa Phiri, Gift Lunga Jnr, Roy Cele, and Voster Chitema took to the pitch, displaying skill and camaraderie that delighted fans of all ages. The match ended 2–1 in favour of Ambassadors.
ZPCS Officer Commanding Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Commissioner Mkhulunyelwa Ngwenya, was in attendance at the festivities, which celebrated not only sport, but also the vital role it plays in rehabilitation and reintegration.
