Sports and Recreation Commission to preside over councillors’ fate

THE Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) will meet soon after the holidays to deliberate on the action to take against 23 Zifa councillors accused of receiving inducements from aspiring candidates in the 2018 Zifa elections.
All the named councillors admitted that they received payments from the then aspiring candidates, including Felton Kamambo, who went on to be elected Zifa president.

Last week the country’s supreme sports body wrote to the councillors through the Zifa secretariat, informing them that it (SRC) was in possession of signed letters compiled by the police for use in the ongoing criminal case against Kamambo in which they all admitted receiving inducements from candidates who were contesting for the local football governing body’s executive committee.

In its letter, the SRC challenged the councillors to show cause why they shouldn’t be suspended and gave them up to Christmas eve to submit their responses.

Yesterday, SRC acting director-general Sebastian Garikai said they had received the councillors’ responses through their legal representatives.

“The Sports and Recreation Commission has received a response from the 23 Zifa councillors through their lawyers. The SRC board is expected to convene a meeting soon after the holidays to deliberate on the councillors’ response,” said Garikai.

It’s a violation of the Fifa Code of Ethics for persons involved in the running of football to receive inducements or fail to declare any “gift” from persons of interest.
