THE Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education in partnership with Kincard International College of Sports Science Research and Technology launched the sports development programme at Chaplin High School in Gweru on Wednesday. The programme seeks to create a database for talented athletes and budding coaches in primary and high schools across the country who will then be awarded scholarships if they show exceptional talent.

Moses Makurumidze, an official for policy, planning and implementation in the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education said the idea of coming up with a database is meant to identify and track the athletes and those who will show exceptional ability would then be awarded scholarships in a move aimed at identifying and nurturing talent.

“The idea behind this programme is to identify talented athletes and coaches who are then put on a database and are then monitored and those who show exceptional ability are given scholarships to further their careers abroad.

“As for the coaches we are looking at doing capacity building and some of the coaches will be attached at the University of Zimbabwe to further their technical skills in their respective sports,” he said.

He added that the programme has since been rolled out in six other provinces and will continue until they have covered all the provinces.

Makurumidze said they will be touring all the eight districts of the province to look for talented athletes in different sporting disciplines and will only move to other provinces when they are done.

Over 100 athletes and coaches from Gweru District attended the launch which ran under the theme, “The heights of sporting talents.”
