THE Chiredzi community has been presented with a golden opportunity to take centre stage as the nation converges for the 2025 Culture Month national launch, an event aimed at honouring Zimbabwe’s rich and diverse cultural heritage.

Running under the theme; “Celebrating Indigenous Voices”, this year’s edition seeks to amplify traditional knowledge systems, promote indigenous languages and encourage artistic expression across multiple creative disciplines.

The national launch of the month-long celebration, which spans all 10 provinces, will take place on May 22, at Rusununguko Clinic Open Grounds under Chief Tsovani, with President Mnangagwa expected to officiate the proceedings.

The event will feature a colourful array of activities, including street marches by artistes and cultural activists, fashion shows and exhibitions of traditional attire, live music and dance performances, arts and crafts showcases, as well as displays of herbal medicine and traditional cuisine.

Speaking to the Zimpapers Arts and Entertainment Hub, National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) Communications and Public Relations Manager, Agga Nyabinde, called on the Chiredzi community to take full ownership of the event.

“This is the perfect opportunity for the people of Chiredzi to come out in numbers and showcase their talents, whether in fashion and design, gastronomy, arts and crafts, traditional dance, or other cultural activities,” said Nyabinde.

“Having the President officially open Culture Month in Chiredzi is a rare honour. We urge the community to shine not just on the day of the launch, but beyond.”

Nyabinde further encouraged creatives in poetry, music, painting, spoken word and literary arts to take advantage of this platform, which coincides with the Unesco-proclaimed World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development on May 21.

To promote cultural identity, he reminded citizens to wear the national dress every Friday and to continue supporting initiatives that celebrate Zimbabwean culture.

Backed by the Ministry of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture and co-ordinated by the NACZ, Culture Month has evolved into a major event that draws participation from across the country.

Nyabinde said Culture Month is more than just a celebration; it is also a tool for economic and social development.

“By showcasing the potential of the creative sector, the event aims to raise awareness of the arts as an employment-generating industry.”
