Sprinter Makanakaishe Charamba finishes fourth in the Weltklasse Zurich Diamond League

ZIMBABWE’S premier sprinter, Makanakaishe Charamba, delivered a commanding performance on Thursday night, clocking 20.10 seconds to finish fourth in the men’s 200m event at the prestigious Weltklasse Zurich Diamond League meeting in Switzerland.

Having mathematically secured his spot before the race, the 24-year-old Olympic finalist ran with absolute confidence.

The performance added five points to his season tally, bringing his total to 24 points and locking in fourth place overall on the final Wanda Diamond League qualification table.

American Olympic silver medalist Kenneth Bednarek won the high-octane race in a blistering 19.62 seconds.

South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile claimed second in 19.82 seconds, while Canada’s Olympic champion Andre de Grasse narrowly edged out Charamba for third in 20.03 seconds.

Charamba comfortably out-sprinted the rest of the elite field, leaving Puerto Rico’s Jose Figueroa and Jamaica’s Bryan Levell in his wake as both tied for fifth at 20.32 seconds.

The stellar execution in Switzerland caps off a remarkably consistent European circuit for the breakthrough Zimbabwean star.

Armed with a top-four seed, “Maka” now heads to Brussels, Belgium, to battle for the ultimate global crown!

Meanwhile, American sprinter Bednarek took the 2026 world lead in the men’s 200m at the Weltklasse Zurich on Thursday night, winning in 19.62 seconds at the Letzigrund.

The time, run into a 0.4m/s headwind, was one hundredth faster than the 19.63 Jaiden Reid clocked in Eugene in June.

It was Bednarek’s fastest performance of the season and just 0.05 outside his personal best, though still a tenth shy of the meeting record of 19.52 set by Noah Lyles in 2022.

Bednarek finished 0.20 seconds clear of Dambile, who took second in 19.82. The South African won the 200m title at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow earlier this year.

Canada’s de Grasse was third in 20.03, with Zimbabwean Charamba fourth in 20.10.

Bednarek had also won the 200m at the Rabat Diamond League earlier this season, setting a meeting record.

Four days before Zurich, he finished second in the 100m at the Silesia Diamond League in 9.87, behind Oblique Seville.

“I knew I can run a little bit faster, I just have to execute a little bit better,” Bednarek said. “The season is pretty much almost at the end point, and I’m feeling pretty good about what the Diamond League final is going to be, and Ultimate Champs. The progression is there, so I’m ready to drop it big time.”

The Diamond League season concludes with the two-day final in Brussels, Belgium, on September 4–5 .
