SPRINTER Nigel Tom bounced back to action winning the senior men’s 400m race in the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe track and field championships held at White City Stadium yesterday. The 23-year-old sprinter won the race in 50.43 seconds while Tinomutenda Zembe and Godknows Sithole came second and third in times of 51.28 and 51.83 respectively.
Tom who boasts of a personal record of 47,01 seconds, had been out of action since May last year due to injury.
“Considering that I have been out of action for a while my time is not bad. I expect to have more competitions so that I run my personal best of 47 seconds,” said Tom.
Milton High School pupil Andile Khumalo clocked 51.19 seconds in the 400m boys’ Under-20 400m with Sparrows athlete Mthabisi Phiri second in 51.51 seconds.
Renowned Bulawayo athlete Yvonne Vanhuvaone lived up to expectations as she won the 400m race in 63.22 seconds. Fortunate Chichichi was five seconds behind Vanhuvaone as she clocked 01 minute 08.04 seconds while third placed was Alison Mpofu who clocked 01 minute 18.66 seconds.
Athletes bemoaned the use of the cinder track which they alleged made them fail to clock good times after the Bulawayo Athletics Board failed to secure the tartan track at the National University of Science Technology because of high user prices.
“The track was bad because we had to compete with fears of picking up injuries as the track was hard,” said Tom.
Bulawayo Athletics Board chairperson Manuel Mpofu praised the athletes and clubs’ attendance.
“It was good competition, but we are hoping that athletes will improve their times in the next competition. We are using the results of these competitions to select the team that will compete in the regional super eight competition.
