William Congreve might have amended his famous saying from the 1697 play The Mourning Bride, to accommodate Mthabeseni Ncube (18), if he had known about his vile temper.
The love-struck teenager from Madlambuzi turned into a violent attacker after his romantic advances were rejected, leaving a 15-year-old girl nursing a stab wound.
Mthabeseni Ncube (18) appeared before Plumtree magistrate Mr Joshua, where he pleaded guilty to stabbing Sukoluhle Ndebele with an okapi knife.
According to prosecutor Sheila Nyathi, the shocking incident happened after Ndebele attended a traditional function that went on until late at night.
As she was leaving, Ncube followed her and professed his love. When Ndebele rejected him, a heated argument erupted outside the homestead.
In a fit of rage, Ncube pulled out an okapi knife from his pocket and stabbed her on the forehead, leaving her bleeding and terrified.
Villagers rushed to the scene and managed to restrain Ncube before handing him over to the police.
Appearing in court, Ncube admitted his guilt and was convicted of assault.
Magistrate Joshua Nembaware sentenced him to 12 months in prison, with six months suspended for five years on condition he does not commit a similar offence during that period.
He will serve six months behind bars with no option of a fine.
