THE Sports and Recreation Commission has postponed to a date in March next year the Annual National Sports Awards that were meant to be held in the capital next month.
In a statement released yesterday, the SRC director general, Prince Mupazviriho said the postponement has been necessitated by the prevailing harsh economic conditions as well as the need to rebrand the awards.
“Zimbabwe’s participation in the African Union Sports Council Region 5 Youth Games set to be held in December and the need to also take into account some of the athletes and officials who are still competing at various levels throughout the world, also contributed to the postponement of the awards,” said the director general.
“The above postponement is meant to ensure improvement in the quality of the Awards and to ensure that the athletes and officials who would have excelled derive maximum benefit from them. National Sports Associations are therefore advised to continue tracking the performance of their athletes and or teams and submit the necessary nominations to the Sports and Recreation Commission,” read the director general’s communiqué.
Karateka Samson Muripo is the reigning Zimbabwe Sports Person of the Year.
