Mandla Moyo, Sports Reporter

SPORTS and Recreation Commission (SRC) sports officer for Tsholotsho district in association with Plan International recently conducted an awareness campaign in the area covering four wards that includes the San community.

According to Prospect Tokoyo Nyamande, the sports officer, the campaign was meant to conscientise the community so that they can have an appreciation of sports .

“This sports awareness campaign was conducted because we wanted the community to have an appreciation of the importance of sports.

During this campaign we covered five wards, spending two days at each one of them which also included the San community. The messages were meant for everyone from boys, girls as well as their parents within the community.”

Nyamande added that the response from the community was overwhelming such that resources willing they could have covered a larger area.

“Many people from the community attended these seminars, among them were influential ones like traditional leaders who all showed a keen interest to hear the message.

What made us happy is that even those people who must spearhead sports programmes in the area were present, that is the coaches from various clubs and schools within the community.”

As the SRC representative Nyamande said while it is their mandate to spread the sports gospel throughout the district they also need support from their stakeholders in terms of mobilisation on resources for use.

As a way of unlocking value she said letters as well as project proposals have been written to the business community requesting for help in any kind.

However, she was quick to express her concern about the great trek towards South Africa which has robbed the district as well as the nation at large of its promising sportspersons.
