THE Sport and Recreation Commission has moved in to put pool structures in the Midlands as it seeks to restore sanity in the sport.
Pool structures are being put in place in all the provinces across the country as part of the roadmap to usher in a new substantive national pool executive to run the affairs of the sport.
There hasn’t been a substantive national pool executive for more than eight years which has seen squabbles being the order of the day, retarding the growth of the game.
Midlands Pool League (MPL) chairman Vandirai Hove was recently elected the Midlands Pool Association (MPA) chairman to head the 11 member executive.
He will be deputised by Future Kamutenga while Passmore Gutu comes in as the secretary general with Vincent Kawanje the treasurer.
Other members of the executive are Rodrick Pasura (marketing and publicity), Thompson Dube (development officer), Owen Chigoya (referees co-ordinator), Paul Mkwembi (players representative),
Passmore Ndebvu (organising secretary), Thabiso Chikono (women representative) and Michael Mujee (disciplinary committee).
The association will oversee the running of district leagues in the province.
Gutu said they hope to attract corporate sponsorship for the smooth running of the district league.
He said: “Our mandate is to oversee the running of the sport in all districts in the province. This we want to ensure that each district has an organised and recognised pool league so that it makes it easier to attract sponsorship.”
“We are also looking at having a champions league after each pool season where the top teams from the districts will battle it out for provincial honours,” added Gutu.
The setting up of district leagues, Gutu said would mean the disbanding of MPL which was dominated by Gweru teams.
He said plans are underway to transform the league into Gweru Pool League following the new developments.
