More than US$1 million is needed to upgrade facilities at St Giles Medical Rehabilitation Centre, an official has said. The centre’s spokesperson Mrs Salome Nziramasanga said this while addressing 17 Harare Institute of Technology engineers and electricians who had come to support the centre by carrying out maintenance work.
The HIT engineers and electricians donated equipment, paint, electrical appliances, wood and other materials worth US$2 600. Mrs Nziramasanga said the centre required US$1 million for refurbishment and to buy new equipment such as hospital beds, rehabilitation equipment and medical equipment.
She said the centre also needed catering equipment and laundry machines.
“As an institution we have not been spared from the economic hardships that have been facing the country over the past years,” she said.
“A dwindling donor base over the years has left us with major maintenance work to carry out. Our equipment is old and outdated and we need to replace it.”
HIT chairperson in the Department of Industrial and Manufacturing, Engineer Rujeko Masike urged all institutions of learning to bring their expertise as well to build and solve problems faced by the centre.
“The reason behind what we are doing is in line with our theme of bringing solutions to the community in line with our university mandate which is to commercialise and transfer technology to all sectors of the economy,” she said.
St Giles Rehabilitation Centre which opened its doors in 1964 offers post stroke, major accident and brain injury patients the ability to regain their motor skills and use limbs that were rendered inactive.
