St Martins Convent School marimba band outshined 200 other African schools at the recently held Education Africa International Competition and Steelpan Festival which ran from July 29 to August 1 in Brooksburg,Johannesburg, where they bagged the top prizes.

The group comprising 15 primary school students, despite it being their debut appearance at the festival defied all odds as they were outstanding in their performances and won two trophies and some instruments.

In an interview with this publication, the thrilled school headmaster Mr Tinashe Gwese said hard work largely contributed to their success and are proud of the gesture.

“I am overwhelmed, thrilled because my music department is up to scratch and only the sky is the limit for us. Although we worked very hard I never thought we would really get the number one prize considering the stiff competition that was there.

“I would also want to thank parents for their unwavering support as well as our SDC. We lifted our country’s flag on high,” he said.
After winning the first prize they were made to compete again with high schools where they tied up on position one. As a result they were made to perform again and St Martins finally became second.

St Martins Convent School was founded in 1962 and it is owned by the Dominican sisters. It is a one-streamed school from ECD to Grade 7. It has been producing outstanding results ever since and from the year 2010 up to 2016 its pass rate has been from 94 to 100 percent.
