Nursing teaching has been suspended at St Theresa Hospital in Chirumanzu after a fire that damaged the nursing tutorial laboratory, library, administration block, kitchen and male students dormitory on Saturday night.
Nothing was salvaged in the fire that left the affected structures extensively damaged.
Chirumanzi district development coordinator Mr Jorum Chimedza said some students had been transferred to Muwonde School of Nursing while the Civil Protection Unit was sourcing food for the hospital.
“The fire damage was so extensive that it destroyed all the schooling materials, dormitory and all the food that was kept in the dining hall,” said Mr Chimedza.
He said efforts were being made to transfer students to other nursing schools as everything was lost in the fire.
“The arrangement is that all the students should be transferred save for those who are in the final year and are supposed to finish in March and so should remain.
“The district civil protection unit was on the ground and the situation is terrible,” said Mr Chimedza. He appealed for donations from the donor world to also assist the rebuilding since damage was so extensive that the district civil protection unit could not restore normalcy without assistance from the corporate world.
“All the quantifications and damage assessment have been done but the truth is that there is really need for some massive work to be done if the hospital is to be revived.”
Mr Chimedza said investigations were still underway to establish the cause of the fire. “No one was injured in the fire,” he said.
