Students from the Zimbabwe Staff College Joint Command and Staff Course Number 39 are arriving at Gwana Primary School in Bulilima for a battle site visit aimed at giving them a first hand appreciation of how the liberation struggle was fought.

The students, drawn from the Zimbabwe Defence Forces and allied forces from across Africa, are being taken through the historical significance of the area as part of their military studies.
Representatives from Botswana, Eswatini, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria and Zambia are among the foreign participants taking part in the course, alongside Zimbabwean officers.

The programme is also expected to be attended by various stakeholders, including local leaders and senior figures with knowledge of the liberation struggle.
Former ZIPRA senior commander Brigadier General (Rtd)Abel Mazinyani and other presenters are expected to take the students through the history of the liberation struggle and the battles fought in the area, sharing experiences and insights from the period.
The visit is part of the course’s practical approach to military education, allowing students to physically visit areas associated with the liberation struggle and gain a deeper understanding of the terrain, conditions and challenges faced by combatants.

As the students arrive at Gwana Primary School, the programme is expected to include presentations on the battles fought in the area and the experiences of communities and combatants during the liberation struggle.

The battle site visits are an important component of the Joint Command and Staff Course, exposing future military commanders to historical military operations while allowing allied officers to appreciate Zimbabwe’s liberation history.
