All stakeholders must come on board in the drive to beautify Harare and to accelerate infrastructural development around the new city in Mt Hampden ahead of Zimbabwe’s hosting of the SADC Summit in August, with all work now on schedule to meet the deadlines.
The development of the new city and the beautification of the existing urban agglomeration are also expected to reap benefits beyond the summit, Information Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Jenfan Muswere said after yesterday’s Cabinet meeting.
The infrastructure boom around Mt Hampden, the site of the new city, followed construction of the New Parliament building, the main venue for the regional summit.
Roads leading to the new city are being upgraded, while new ones are being constructed, with the Government pushing contractors to meet or beat deadlines. Government has expressed satisfaction with progress on road construction, with one of the major feeder roads Nemakonde Road (formerly Lomagundi) being widened into a dual carriageway all the way to the access roads.
Harare City and other major urban centres have suffered years of poor service delivery and stalled development under the watch of opposition-led local authorities.
“Cabinet was apprised of progress made in the country’s preparations to host the 44th SADC Summit of Heads of State and Government in August 2024 as presented by Honourable Vice President, Dr Constantino Chiwenga,” said Dr Muswere
