Starbrite Season 12 semi-finals kicked off yesterday at a colourful event held at Habhana Lounge in the capital with a renowned team of panellists sharing nuggets of wisdom with contestants.
This year’s season honours yesteryear’s legendary musician Matthew ‘Mateo’ Kaunda’s paMuhacha.
Kaunda is also part of the panellists, together with veterans Kiren Zulu and Dudu Manhenga.
Contestants perfectly executed paMuhacha, showcasing their creativity and diversity, thereby delighting the crowd and panellists.
In an interview, Starbrite’s director Barney Mpariwa commended efforts made in making the event a success.
“We wanted contestants to interpret the song and explore their creativity while maintaining the identity of the song,” he said.
“They did quite well. Our aim is not only to crown a winner but to also nurture talent from within. We want to equip artistes with the necessary skills. That is why we take our team through immense training. It has to go beyond merely participating in a talent show.”
Mateo said he felt honoured.
“I am greatly humbled. It has been 25 years since paMuhacha. I never thought it could be switched into something this beautiful. The fusion they did was amazing,” he said.
“Contestants were diversified in showcasing their talent. There is a great need to support artistes.”
Dudu Manhenga applauded the impact that Starbrite has had so far.
“It is so exciting to see young artistes coming up. If only they could understand the privilege they have now,” she said.
“I am excited to be making history with such a generation. I remember how difficult it was for us to start out back then. There were about five females in the industry and we were limited to a few programmes.”
As the Season 12 finals draw closer, only six contestants will battle it out in November.
