LAST night the Government announced that it would give former Eagles, Highlanders and national team utility player Rahman Gumbo a State assisted funeral.
He died in Botswana last Friday at the age of 59 and will be buried in Bulawayo on Saturday.
The announcement was made at the family home last night by Zanu-PF Politburo member, Elifas Mashava who read a letter from the secretary-general of the ruling party Obert Mpofu, advising the family and mourners of the developments.
Minister of Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Development, Judith Ncube, addressing mourners said the province and country had lost a hard working person who had been a good ambassador of the country.
Minister Ncube explained that President Mnangagwa had given Gumbo a state assisted funeral in recognition of his work in football.
Minister Ncube said as a player and coach, Gumbo had contributed to the country’s development through sport.
“Let’s unite as a family and build each other and the country. Let us give Rahman a befitting send off. President Mnangagwa is mourning with the family, friends and the rest of the country,” she said. The gesture by the government is a fitting tribute to a great player and personality who had a very positive social impact to those who got to know him closely and beyond.
