THE six Highlanders supporters who perished in an accident 15 kilometres from Amazon Shopping Centre along Filabusi Road last Sunday have been granted State assisted funerals.
The fans died when the NV350 kombi they were travelling in rammed into a stationary tipper truck before a Honda Fit piled up into the crash.
Four people survived and were rushed to hospital.
The supporters were travelling back to Filabusi after watching a Highlanders versus Herentals match earlier that Sunday at Barbourfields Stadium.
Highlanders Football Club expressed gratitude to Government for granting State assisted funerals to the departed supporters.
“Highlanders Football Club wishes to express its profound gratitude to His Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe, Cde Dr Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa, and the Government of Zimbabwe for granting State-Assisted Funerals to our six beloved supporters who tragically lost their lives in the road accident that occured near Filabusi on Sunday, 23 August 2026.
“Our supporters were travelling back to Filabusi after watching Highlanders FC play Herentals FC at Barbourfields Stadium when tragedy struck, claiming six precious lives and leaving our Club, their families, friends and the entire football fraternity in deep mourning,” said Highlanders in a statement.
The club said the decision by Government to accord State assisted funerals was a compassionate and meaningful gesture that will provide much-needed assistance to the bereaved families.
“At Highlanders, our supporters are more than people in the stands – they are family. These six supporters travelled in love and loyalty for the black and white, and their contribution to the Highlanders story will never be forgotten. As we prepare to bid farewell to our beloved supporters, we remain united with their families in grief and gratitude,”
Bosso thanked President Mnangagwa and Government for standing with the Highlanders family in their hour of sorrow.
