Stink over burst sewer pipes

Andrew Muvishi Herald Reporter

The Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has raised concern over sewer bursts in Mufakose and urged the Harare City Council to repair them to prevent further pollution of water  sources .

EMA’s environmental manager for Harare Metropolitan Province, Mr  Robson Mavondo, said raw sewage was being discharged into Marimba River which flows into Lake Chivero and there was a high possibility that underground water would be contaminated, further worsening the cholera  situation.

“We have noticed that there is environmental pollution taking place here. Council has dug a trench to contain sewage and it is now sinking into the ground and is likely to pollute underground water.

“All residents who reside here are likely to be affected by cholera because they draw their water from shallow wells,” he   said.

Meanwhile, Mufakose residents have called on the Harare City Council to attend to serious bursts in Muriti and Mubayamhondoro streets.

Responding to the residents’ pleas, council corporate communications manager Mr Michael Chideme said the city council would deploy more teams to attend to the problem.
