Street artist creates own brand of graffiti fashion

Bubelo Moyo

Art is a language that not only the literate can relate to, but all and sundry!

A local paint-colourist, Sbangiswani “Dewas” Moyo by the street corner in the City of Kings is making a living out of garment and trainers graffiti while customers wait and he sees himself in a proper establishment in the next few years through art.

It has been long coming for the prodigal arts-man who by his word claims to have tried different careers but little did he know that his calling was in talking to humankind through his artworks.

“For too long I wasted precious years doing what I wasn’t born for,” said Moyo.

Since elementary education Moyo has been a good artist, even his parents tried to nurture his talent but he was sceptical about doing it professionally.

“I listened to a T.D Jakes motivational session in which he said, ‘Most people fail in life not because there are no jobs, they fail because they are failing to use their talents properly by using what God gave them’,” said Moyo.

From that point Moyo never hesitated to dust and twirl back the clock by unearthing his long-lost talent.

“I’m able to pay my rent and put a meal on the table through street corner art and that is a good thing.

“My works relay a message to the public since art is a language that most people can relate to and interpret in their own way. I’m happy to be touching souls out there,” he said.

The artist believes that he is going to move from the corner stall to a proper gallery.

“Rome was not built in one day, it’s only a matter of time before I move to a proper establishment,” said the painter.

Moyo operates from a corner booth at Joshua Nkomo Street and 9th Avenue in Bulawayo.

In his street gallery there are T-shirts, jean jackets and trainers painted with colourful fabric paints.
