A 25-year-old Midlands State University student was last week fined $200 for impersonating a police officer at the just-ended 6th Zanu-PF National People’s Congress. Brighton Nyasvisvo appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Batanai Madzingira charged with impersonation of a police officer. Before Mr Madzingira passed his ruling, he highlighted that Nyasvisvo was a first offender and that a non-custodial sentence was appropriate.“You are a first offender and there is hope for redemption. A fine will be appropriate for this kind of offence, but I hope you have learnt a lesson.” Circumstances are that Nyasvisvo was at the Zanu-PF Headquarters on the day police officers were getting accreditation for the congress. The court heard that Nyasvisvo, who was in the queue with the police officers, gave Moses Rutope his “force number” in order to have his accreditation processed.
But Rutope was suspicious of the force number and called Sergeant Chaponda who was in charge of the process.
It is alleged that when Nyasvisvo was asked his force number by Sergeant Chaponda he gave a different one from the one he had given to Rutope.
