UNIVERSITY of Zimbabwe students face increasing accommodation challenges, with many now having to rent rooms at private houses where landlords are charging exorbitant rentals.
The secretary general of the student representative council, Mr Takunda Chinoda, said those with campus accommodation are paying the same US$616 equivalent as last year per semester.
But these are a minority.
Most students have private landlords.
“The fees of accommodation haven’t increased but the problem is a shortage of accommodation inside the campus. The Ministry of Tertiary and Higher Education must solve the accommodation issue by constructing more dormitories inside campus which will cater for a large number of students,” Mr Chinoda said.
The problem of accommodation has been growing over the years as intakes increase without the extra halls of residence being built, with the biggest jump being around 50 percent more students admitted in 2016.
