“He was really in pain and when he was admitted at Parirenyatwa Hospital he died at 9:30am today (yesterday),” he said.
“He died of sepsis complications although he had been suffering from meningitis.”
Mawuru’s was one of the most celebrated producers of the blockbuster film Neria, a television talk show, This is Life, and the popular Studio 263 which reached 2000 episodes during its run and was the first Zimbabwean soap to be screened on DStv’s Africa Magic.
The death of Mawuru has dealt a big blow to the arts sector and by yesterday scores of mourners including film makers, actors, actresses and producers thronged his home to pass their condolences.
Ex-Studio 263 cast including Pretty Xaba, Charles “Wakanaka” Kapfupi and Charity Ndlovu visited Mawuru’s home. National Arts Council of Zimbabwe director Elvas Mari said Zimbabwe had lost a brilliant filmmaker.
“Death is painful when we lose the best,” he said. “Mawuru was a beacon of the film industry and his works speak volumes of his knowledge in that area.”
Daves Guzha, a theatre producer, said he lost a friend of outstanding character, a visionary and a legend.
Mawuru will be buried at his rural home in Chiguhune, Gutu on Monday.
Mourners are gathered at 28 Clovelly Road, Chadcombe. Mawuru survived by his wife Tsitsi and two children — Joe and Rumbidzai.
