LONDON. — Daniel Sturridge was forced to defend himself on Twitter after he appeared to dismiss playing for England as second fiddle to his club career at Liverpool only hours before the national team’s World Cup soccer crunch tie against Ukraine.
In an interview that appeared on the club’s official website, the 24-year-old striker said: “I’m more worried about Liverpool and more worried about putting in good performances for us, winning games and challenging for trophies. That’s my main ambition — it’s not about playing for England.
“That comes with doing the things you do for your club and if I don’t play well here, I won’t get the opportunity to do it there (World Cup finals).”
His words were immediately picked up by England fans who turned on him on the social network, and the timing, on the eve of a crucial World Cup qualifier in Kiev for Roy Hodgson’s team, was hardly ideal. — Mailonline.
