HWANGE-based Victor Suerga was retained unopposed as president of the Matabeleland Golf Association (MGA) for another one-year term.
The former Hwange Golf Club captain and chairman will, however, have to wait a bit longer to know the identity of his deputy after the post was left vacant during the annual general meeting held at the country’s oldest golf club, Bulawayo Golf Club (BGC). This was after outgoing vice-president Jebus Karuru left the meeting early for an urgent engagement.
The meeting, according to Suerga, also agreed to defer elections for the post of secretary after Shepherd Huni, who held the post, could not make it to the meeting.
“Members felt it’s only proper that we leave the post vacant because we weren’t sure whether he wanted to contest or not,” said Suerga.
The post of treasurer went to another Hwange Golf Club member John Dube, while captains of the five golf clubs under the jurisdiction of the association all became committee members.
Hwange, Elephant Hills, Bulawayo Country Club, Harry Allen and Bulawayo Golf clubs are the five clubs under the MGA.
“During my first tenure in office, I oversaw three of our five clubs getting into the national handicap database system, which is a huge stride. This is a computerised system whereby when you play anywhere in the country, you just enter your score into the system and your handicap is automatically calculated,” Suerga said.
He also revealed that youngster Jack Allard from the BGC had gone to the United States of America on a golf scholarship.
Meanwhile, the Eisenhower Golf Championship qualifiers get underway this weekend in Zvishavane, while the Matabeleland Amateur Championships that also serve as a qualifier for the Eisenhower Championship set to be held in Mexico in September, will be held from June17-19.
“We expect all our youngsters that are outside the country to start trickling in for the qualifiers that will be over five rounds,” said Suerga.
The Bulawayo Country Club will tomorrow hold its Friday fun league final featuring more than 50 players.
They will compete in a match play format, whose scoring system sees a player or team earning a point for each hole they would have bettered their opponents.
