Sugar production surpasses 333 000 tonnes

THZ owns sugar plantations Hippo Valley and Triangle Limited in Masvingo province.
Sugar production dipped during the past decade during the crippling economic downturn, which saw a rise in operational costs as well as shortages of raw materials and spare parts.

This resulted in sugar refineries halting exports as they were failing to meet local demand.
THZ managing director Mr Sydney Mtsambiwa told New Ziana sugar production had surged due to increase in raw sugar supply.

“Sugar production is expected to surpass the 2010/11 production levels of 333 000 tonnes,” he said.
“I cannot disclose the actual tonnage growth figures at the moment as we are in a closed period.”

Mr Mtsambiwa said with increased production, exports were set to resume.
“Exports to preferential markets in Europe and the USA will start once sugar pro- duction. – New Ziana.
