A soldier who blew off his head with an AK-47 assault rifle in a suspected case of suicide on Saturday night, was a top striker for Zifa Bulawayo Province Division Two League side LG Vultures.

Blessing Munetsi, 31, reportedly told his close friends that he was having serious marital problems before blowing his head at Imbizo Barracks.

LG Vultures FC owner and director Lawrence Gwati said they were still in a state of extreme shock following the tragic death of their top striker.

“He has been our top goal scorer for the past two seasons, scoring 18 goals last season and 15 this season. It’s really hard to believe that he’s gone,” said a distraught Gwati.

LG Vultures finished the 2015 season on seventh place with 44 points and scored 33 goals, almost half of them coming from Munesti.

Before joining LG Vultures, Munetsi, who was nicknamed “Bhazana” by his teammates, played for Division One side Lions in Masvingo before being transferred by the army to Bulawayo.

He almost played for army side Indlovu Iyanyathela that is coached by former Highlanders’ captain Bekithemba Ndlovu.

Gwati revealed that while they did not really know what was troubling Munetsi, his numerous WhatsApp status updates could have been messages of pain.

“Even his last three games for us were not up to his standard. Bhazana was a top notch striker but in the last games, he never lived up to standard and we all wondered what could have been the problem.

“If only we had tried to probe, maybe he could have opened up to us. A problem shared is a problem solved,” said the Bulawayo businessman.

Munetsi is expected to be buried in his rural home in Honde Valley, Manicaland, today.
