Sunday Mail Editor Mrs Victoria Ruzvidzo walked away with the Distinguished Editor Award at the Zimbabwe Community Trailblazers Awards that were held recently at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC).

The awards recognise outstanding individuals making a difference in the health, education, mining, media, tourism, music, and sports sectors.

The awards ceremony ran under the theme “Promoting a healthy and mutually supportive community”.

Speaking after receiving the Distinguished Health Champion award, businessman Dr Vivak Solanki said: “When I heard that over 24 000 healthcare workers had left the country, I had to step in and said the Government cannot do this alone; the private sector has to step up.

“We have helped the Government in many sectors. The Government helped me first, they gave me a special economic zone status when I was building my hospital.

“This has helped in the expansion of the hospital, providing almost all facilities that are available in the Western world here in Harare, Zimbabwe.

“It is not everyone who can build hospitals and clinics, but those of us who have
the ability, have a duty to develop the
sector.”

In his acceptance speech, real estate mogul Mr Ken Sharpe said the awards were a testament to the great work being done to foster development in local communities.

Zimpapers commercial radio station Star FM received the Outstanding Radio Station Award, while the stable’s Chronicle newspaper received the Outstanding Regional Publication Award.

Capitalk 100.4 FM presenters Phathisani Sibanda and Tinashe Chikuse walked away with the Hottest Presenters’ Award.

Other winners on the night were Dr Christine Peta, who received the Distinguished Disability Advocacy Champion gong, and Dr Tinashe Muzamhindo, who was recognised as the Outstanding Policy Researcher.

Zimbabwe national team cricket captain Sikandar Raza was given the Distinguished Sportsperson Award.
