The Sunday Mail reporter Veronica Gwaze was crowned the 2022 Female Sports Writer of the Year at the Sports Writers Association of Zimbabwe (SWAZ) awards ceremony held in the capital last week.
Gwaze’s winning entry was an article titled “Gems Star Living the Dream . . . home turned into monument”, which looked at the rise of Zimbabwe senior netball team captain Felisitus Kwangwa.
She was awarded a certificate of excellence, a gift and cash.
This is Gwaze’s second award in three months after she bagged the National Journalism and Media Award (NJAMA) Agriculture Reporter of the Year 2022 (runner-up) late last year.
In saluting Gwaze, SWAZ chairperson Farirai Machamire said the winning entry demonstrated that the reporter had travelled to the source and produced a well-packaged story.
“The story was a complete package, which showed that she travelled to the community where the source launched her career,” he said.
“She also gave the readers a view into Kwangwa’s formative years, captured her parents’ feelings, took visuals and traced
her rise all the way to Surrey Storm.”
