Sunday News extends its sincere apologies

sun newsThe Sunday News on 12 October 2014 carried prominently on its front page and on its website a story on the gruesome murder of Ms Fortunate Mutale by her live-in boyfriend, Wonder Musaka, that left the Siabuwa community in Binga in a state of extreme shock.Accompanying the story of this heinous crime, were admittedly graphic pictures of the victim – a decision we took having considered the violent scale of this astonishing act of brutality. In using those particular images we sought to show the impact of the savage attack.

It was not our intention to cause offense to our readers, to the nation at large or to visit any further grief to the friends and family of the victim. We sincerely regret that the pictures aggrieved some of our readers as this was an unintended consequence of a judgment call that we felt at the time would aid us in capturing the full extent of that horrific incident.

Our own shock and incredulity were such that we adjudged that there were no words that could fully capture this brutal murder without using the pictures. This approach offended some of our valued readers and we apologize unreservedly.

In this regard, we do accept the criticism that has been directed at us from some quarters since the publishing of the images and have since pulled down the image from our website.

We thank all our readers who used our various online platforms to engage us on this matter and we will endeavor to remain mindful of their concerns regarding the kind of pictorial content we choose to publish in future.

We welcome your feedback on our content and are confident that your constructive criticism will enable us to better our paper.
