Benjani donates to Highlanders players

FORMER Manchester City forward, Benjani Mwaruwari yesterday donated foodstuffs to Highlanders players, Zulu Chiefs social soccer club and Old Magwegwe community to cushion them against the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The ex-Warriors captain gave 900 families a food hamper each that consisted of a 10kg bag of maize meal, 750ml of cooking oil and a 500-gramme packet of sugar beans, worth ZWL$540 000.

The donation, courtesy of the Benjani Mwaruwari Foundation and associates, also saw Entembeni Old People’s Home receiving the food parcels.

Thirty Highlanders players and members of the technical bench also received the food parcels.

Handing over the foodstuffs, Mwaruwari’s brother, Chris said they were conscious of the effects of Covid-19 and decided to lend a hand through the donation.

The parcels were handed out at Marisha ground in Old Magwegwe.

“We know the difficult situation that players are facing in this current period when the game is on hold and we are aware Highlanders recently lost a sponsor and those mainly affected are the players, so we felt compelled to give them something.

“Zulu Chiefs is Benjani’s former social soccer club and the hampers were given to players and supporters,” said Chris.

He said having grown up in Old Magwegwe, Benjani felt obliged to assist the needy in the suburb with all households in the area getting a hamper each. Chris said they were glad the handover to Entembeni came at the right time as the Luveve-based geriatric institution fell victim to thieves last Wednesday, who made off with foodstuffs.
