Police are appealing to hospitals and private doctors to be on the look out for a suspect who was injured during the explosive that killed a man in Sunningdale, Harare, on Monday. Investigations have revealed that one of the four suspects who brought the explosive was injured during the blast and fell into a maize field. His accomplices carried him into their vehicle and rushed off the scene. Police are keen to question the four suspects in connection with the case.
They identified the explosive as an 81mm mortar bomb that was brought by four people — three men and a woman — to Moses Mudefi’s house who died while trying to grind it. The four were travelling in a Pajero minibus that was parked a few metres from the deceased’s house.
Chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said yesterday that the injured suspect was one of the three men.
Snr Asst Comm Charamba appealed to private hospitals and doctors to report anyone seeking treatment with injuries and bruises on his body without a police report. She said they should contact Police General Headquarters on (04) 703631 or any nearest police station.
On Monday, the four first approached Courage Chiyangwa, a welder, and told him that they wanted him to open the object, but he refused.
They then moved to Mudefi’s house where they offered him US$5 for the job.
Mudefi started working on the bomb which then exploded, killing him on the spot and injuring a colleague, James Mupunga. He was taken to Harare Central Hospital for treatment.
Members of the Bomb Disposal Unit, CID Forensic Unit and detectives visited the scene for investigations.
The explosion was reminiscent of the Chitungwiza incident that killed six people and destroyed 12 houses last year.
