THE NATIONAL Athletics Association of Zimbabwe will today hold their second Super Eight competition at the National Sports Stadium in Harare as they continue with their selection of athletes to represent the country in different regional and international meets.
The competition will see around 200 athletes, who are in the top eight in their respective events, competing against each other in all track and field events.

The Super Eight is organised by NAAZ but is being hosted by the Harare Athletics Board and Silas Muringani, who is the board’s secretary-general, said they were ready to host the event.

“This is the second one we have hosted so far. We are actually focusing on the best in the country. The major aim is to give exposure and challenge to the athletes. We are now bringing the best together.

“Actually, we are expecting over 200 participants and our aim is to ensure that our athletes for the World Junior Championships get the challenge they need and for athletes from provinces to focus on the National Youth Games.

“As Zimbabwe we are also targeting to see who the best is for the African Union Sports Region Five Youth Games,” said Muringani.

Muringani said they were also considering athletes with closer times to those in the top eight so that they give everyone with the potential the opportunity to prove themselves.

“We are also taking in some athletes who have the time closer to the qualifying times for the top eight.

“We expect to see some good quality competition considering that there are some prizes at the end, we need people to qualify for regional, World Championships and YOG (Youth Olympic Games,” said Muringani.

This first Super Eight competition was held early this month as part of efforts by the national athletics association to keep the athletes active as they choose teams to compete in various regional, continental and international events.
