ZIMBABWE have secured automatic qualification for the 2028 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup following their progression to the Super Eights of the ongoing 2026 edition, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed.
In a media release issued on Wednesday, the International Cricket Council announced that all teams that reached the Super Eights stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 have earned direct berths to the next tournament, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand in 2028.
Zimbabwe progressed to the second stage from Group B alongside Sri Lanka, joining Pakistan and India (Group A), the West Indies and England (Group C), as well as South Africa and New Zealand (Group D).
Pakistan completed the Super Eights line-up after defeating Namibia on Wednesday.
According to the ICC, the co-hosts Australia and New Zealand had already been granted automatic qualification for the 2028 event. However, New Zealand’s advancement to the Super Eights means they also qualify by virtue of performance.
“The teams that have progressed to the Super Eights of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 have secured automatic qualification for the next edition of the tournament,” read part of the ICC statement.
The 2028 tournament will feature 20 teams, with 12 automatic qualification spots. Apart from the Super Eights teams and the hosts, the remaining three places will be awarded to the next highest-ranked sides in the ICC Men’s T20I Team Rankings as of March 9 — the day after the scheduled final.
Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Ireland are set to secure those places, with no remaining international fixtures that could impact their rankings before the cut-off date.
For Zimbabwe, the development guarantees their presence at the 2028 global showpiece without the need to navigate the qualification pathway, providing certainty and stability as they continue to build on their return to the Super Eights stage.
