THIEVES broke into Pick n Pay supermarket, Aspindale branch in Harare, by climbing through the roof before stealing US$50 000 in cash and assorted goods on Monday.
National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said investigations into the incident were still in progress.
Sources close to the investigations said on Monday at around 8pm, the shop was closed for the night and two security guards were left manning the mall where the supermarket is located.
Five minutes before midnight, Fawcett security company received a signal that its alarms at the supermarket had been disturbed.
A reaction team was sent, but when they checked the premises, they could not find anything and returned to base.
At about 2am, the team was sent back to the supermarket, but again could not find anything amiss.
The supermarket’s assistant manager went to the shop at around 5am to start the early morning opening routine and noticed that the it had been broken into.
He promptly contacted ZRP Marimba.
Police discovered that the thieves had climbed onto the roof and cut off roofing sheets to gain entry into the shop.
Once inside they opened the CCTV monitoring room and disconnected the cameras.
The thieves then forcibly opened the door to the safe and used grinders to cut two safe locks used by BancABC and TM Pick n Pay to keep cash.
They got away with US$50 000.
