THERE were only two games in South Africa’s Absa Premiership this past weekend as most fixtures were rescheduled to pave way for the first leg of the Caf Champions League final between Orlando Pirates and Egyptian champions, Al Ahly.
Former Dynamos striker Roderick Mutuma was an unused substitute as his Bloemfontein Celtic drew 0-0 with Terrence Mandaza’s Maritzburg United at the Kaizer Sebothelo Stadium in Free State.
Mandaza also did not play for The Team of Choice.
At Rustenburg’s Royal Bafokeng Stadium, former Dynamos and Zimbabwe national team defender Kaitano Tembo and his Supersport United were handed their first loss of the season – a 3-0 mauling by MTN Super Eight champions Platinum Stars.
With the loss, United dropped to second in the league on goal difference from Moroka Swallows after eight games.
A brace from Mogakolodi Ngele and another goal from Henrico Botes condemned United, for whom Tembo is the assistant coach, to the defeat.
Stars rose to fourth position on the 16-team log, a point below Mamelodi Sundowns, who have played seven games so far.
In the National First Division, Witbank Spurs, home to former Young Warriors stars Patrick and Peter Mubaiwa led Witbank Spurs to a 1-0 win away to Jomo Cosmos on Saturday.
Spurs are now ranked 11th in the 16-team league, 12 points behind pacesetters Milano United, who at eight games have played a game more.
Warriors striker Brian Abbas Amidu played the whole 90 minutes as Black Leopards beat Durban-based Thanda Royal Zulu 2-1 at the Seshego Stadium in Polokwane.
Leopards are now 10th on the log, 10 points below the leaders, but Amidu said the rise had begun for them.
“The way we played and the result were both a motivation for us to do more. We showed a winning mentality,” Amidu said.
“Our target is that by Christmas, we should be on top of the log, or somewhere near there because we are targeting promotion at the end of the season.”
Amidu has scored two goals in 10 games and hopes to continue hitting the nets and realise his dream of playing in the South African PSL again.
