Supervisor escapes jail after conveyor belt attack

Midlands Bureau
A supervisor with a Redcliff-based steel company, Steelmakers, escaped jail after he appeared in court for allegedly shoving a co-worker into a rolling conveyor belt.

Kwekwe Magistrate Mr Storey Rushambwa threw out the case against Mohammed Shohrab due to lack of evidence after appearing before him, facing attempted murder charges.

Shohrab was accused of allegedly shoving Mr Mabasa Bereredzai into a rolling conveyor belt after the two had a misunderstanding while at work.

The incident left Bereredzai injured, but Mr Rushambwa said there was no corroborating evidence to nail the accused.

The State case led by Mr Freddy Ndoro was that in November last year, at an unknown date, the two were working at their Redcliff plant where Bereredzai was trying to repair a fault.

The two, the court heard, had a misunderstanding after Bereredzai indicated that the space they intended to work on was too small, and was not safe for two people.

Shohrab, however, insisted that the space was suitable enough, resulting in the misunderstanding.

It was during this heated argument that Shohrab allegedly shoved Bereredzai into the rolling mill and he was dragged for some metres.

The complainant sustained serious injuries all over the body and was rushed to Kwekwe District Hospital.

Mr Rushambwa, however, dismissed the matter saying the complainant should have reported the matter to the police on the day of the incident.
