The Zimbabwe Republic Police Support Unit this year arrested more than 39 000 people for various crimes highlighting the effectiveness of the unit in the fight against crime, Deputy Commissioner General Innocent Matibiri said yesterday. Speaking at an end of year party in Harare, Dep Comm Matibiri said the police paramilitary wing performed well in fighting crime.
“This year alone Support Unit accounted for 39 091 arrests for various crimes such as smuggling, poaching, cattle rustling, loitering for the purposes of prostitution and illegal mining among other crimes,” he said.
“The recoveries you made in the form of arms of war are a true reflection that the unit knows very well its mandate and is doing well to fulfil it.”
The figure rose by 7 577 from last year’s figure of 31 423 demonstrating the success of the quasi – military wing in reducing crime and providing an effective and efficient police service in the country.
However, the statistics for the Support Unit does not cover robbery, housebreaking and other general crimes committed in the country.
