A MAN accused of stealing a mobile phone and wallet at an accident scene appeared in court on Thursday.

Tadious Thomas was brought before Harare provincial magistrate Ms Ruth Moyo facing charges of robbery.

While applying for bail, Thomas admitted to taking the items, claiming he was tempted by the situation as the complainant appeared disoriented following the accident.

“I took the phone unnoticed and later sold it to someone, who turned out to be a policeman,” he said.

The State, represented by Mr Takudzwa Jambawu, opposed bail, arguing that the accused was of no fixed abode and could interfere with witnesses.

Magistrate Moyo remanded him in custody to July 2, when he will be referred to a trial court.

The complainant, identified as Ronald Chinomona, was involved in a road accident on April 6, 2025, at around 1 am at the intersection of 8th Street and Samora Machel Avenue, Harare.

According to the State, Thomas, in connivance with another suspect, Milton Dzaguma who is also in custody for the same case approached Chinomona at the accident scene.

The two allegedly assaulted him multiple times on the face with open hands and stole a Samsung A14 cellphone, a wallet containing US$80 and various personal documents.

The stolen items were valued at US$300.

Property worth US$150 was recovered.

Detectives investigating the case recovered the stolen cellphone on the same day and took it to the police station as suspected stolen property.

However, it was not until June 25, 2025, that detectives received information linking Thomas to the robbery.

Acting on the tip-off, officers arrested him later that morning.

Chinomona was called to the police station, where he positively identified the cellphone as the one stolen from him during the incident.
